What started out as an undergarment for men to be worn under other clothing, came into its own and has now become the most comfortable and casual outerwear for both men and women. Style purists condemn T-shirt as a sloppy and very casual garment that should play a minimal role in a man’s wardrobe. But the unmatched comfort and effortless style quotient lent by a simple T-shirt makes it a popular choice among men of all ages. While T-shirts can never qualify as an occasion or wedding wear, they can make any man look stylish when paired with the right pieces. Pay attention to these things to get your answer to “When to wear a T-shirt”?

We wore blue jeans and T-shirts. Our music was our gimmick.

-Gary Rossington

Your age: T-shirt definitely looks much better on younger men as compared to older ones.

Your Build: A T-shirt looks especially good on the shapely body. An overweight person’s belly would be emphasized in a T-shirt while an underweight person will look even skinnier in one. People who are overweight or underweight should wear more structured clothing likes jackets, shirts and blazers.

The impression you want to build: a T-shirt is a complete no-no if you want to create a lasting impression. As it imparts a very casual look, it is perfect for a get-together with friends or hanging out around the house. But even a slightly formal occasion demands more formal clothing.

There are certain parameters to be kept in mind while choosing a T-shirt. These are:

Elegance is always in style for men. There are all different kinds of elegance. It can be silk, it can be a T-shirt.

Fit: The right fit is as important in a T-shirt as it is in any other clothing.

  • Size- A well fitted T-shirt means that it should neither be too tight or too loose. If you have a good physique you can opt for a T-shirt that is on the tighter side. If your belly shows, then you should go for a slightly loose fit T-shirt that covers your curves , thus making you look less bulky.
  • Length- A ideal length of the T-shirt should be a few inches below your waistband. The bottom hem of the tee should not be higher than your hip. It looks smart this way.
  •  Sleeves- The sleeves of your T-shirt should fall halfway up above the upper arm. In case you are quite tall, it can fall a little farther down.
  • Shoulder seams- The shoulder seams of the tee should be perfectly aligned with the end of your shoulders.
  • Shape- A boxy cut T-shirt will make you look more sloppy than smart. Choose one that follows the shape of your body a little.

Collar/Neckline: T-shirt come in two necklines- the V neck and the crew neck. The crew neck is the most classic one, and is well suited to people having a long neck and a slight build and frame. A V neck imparts more style to a T-shirt and has a less formal feel. It looks good on men with broader or rounder faces.

Color/Pattern/ Design: T-shirts in basic colours like white, black, grey and navy look classic and can be teamed with other pieces easily. Pocketed and striped tees also look good and add variety to your collection. To get a younger and cool look, opt for graphic tees.

Material : T-shirt made out of 100% cotton are more comfortable and look good. For workouts, opt for tees made from special synthetic fabrics.
