The fit is a very important factor to be considered while buying a formal shirt as it can make your break your overall appearance.
There are five main parameters that should be acknowledged to ensure that a shirt fits you just perfectly. These are:
- Collar: A gaping collar and a tight collar are both a big no-no for a perfectly fitting shirt. Use this simple trick to find whether the collar sits right on your neck. Fully fasten the top button of the shirt and see whether a finger width of space is still left.
- Shoulders: You may not be blessed with the torso of a Greek God but that does not mean that no attention should be paid to the way the shirt sit at your shoulders. A well-fitted shirt at the shoulders creates an illusion of a more masculine frame. A simple trick can be used to make the shoulders appear wider than they actually are. The joint of the sleeve and the shoulder should sit at the ‘humeral head’ i.e. the widest part of the shoulders.
- Chest: The look of any shirt will be killed if the buttons are strained. It is important to select a short that is neither too tight nor too loose. The fit of the shirt should be such that it allows free movement of the arms and the upper body, making you feel comfortable.
- Sleeves: For a perfectly fitting shirt, the length of the sleeve should be up to the point where the wrist meets your hand. The girth of the shirt is also important. It should be narrow enough to look clean but should not cause any discomfort.
Length: Formal shirts are basically meant to be tucked inside. To avoid coming untucked, it should reach to the bottom of the backside.
